Joel Is Johnstone’s Young Painter Of The Year

Joel Mortlock, Johnstone's Young Painter of the Year 2015Joel Mortlock has been named the Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year after a tense final at the National Painting and Decorating Show in Coventry.

The Doncaster College student fended off competition from reigning champion Ryan Chamberlain, along with six other finalists, to clinch the title in the 11th year of the competition. His proficiency with a paintbrush was rewarded with a £3,000 prize haul as well as the coveted trophy.

The Ricoh Arena provided the setting for the event, which took place as part of the biggest annual trade show event in the UK painting and decorating industry.

In front of a crowd of thousands, the eight competing finalists had to prove their abilities by completing a wide-ranging technical specification set for them by Johnstone’s Trade, and Joel’s high calibre execution of the tasks grabbed the attention of the judges.

The student, who also works as an apprentice for Bagnalls, delivered an outstanding finish to all of the tasks he carried out at the competition workstation, which featured a wall panel as well as a door and framework.

The young decorators were all required to show their dexterity using different types of paint, and judges watched each contestant display their painting and cutting in skills, using brushes, rollers, and stencils.

Joel said: “I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the competition – learning new skills, meeting new people and working under pressure while being closely watched by the thousands of visitors to the show. It’s a real dream come true for me and is worth all the hours I’ve spent practising my skills! It’s given me a big confidence boost and I know that when it comes to taking the first steps in my career after college, owning the Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year 2015 title is going to make a massive difference to my CV.”

Joel’s tutor at Doncaster College, Glynn Nettleton, said: “This competition offers young people a fantastic opportunity to showcase their skills on a national stage and help further their career. Joel’s an inspiration to other painting and decorating students at Doncaster College and we couldn’t be prouder of him for winning!”

The Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year competition has been recognising and encouraging emerging talent from across the UK for 11 years, and each year thousands of students working towards NVQ level 2 or an Intermediate Construction Award in Painting and Decorating are invited to challenge for the title.

James Surtees, a member of the Johnstone’s technical team, said: “The aim of the competition has always been to upskill and instill professionalism in young people entering the industry. The standard shown by this year’s competitors is proof that the industry is in safe hands and we couldn’t be prouder in giving them a chance to shine in front of professional painters.”

Joel’s comprehensive prize package included an iPad Air 16GB with SkullCandy Crusher Headphones, and decorating sundries kindly donated by Mirka, Purdy, Toupret, Brushmate, Graham and Brown, Fat Hog, Graco and Hamilton.
