The UK paint manufacturer, which has a heritage stretching back hundreds of years in Hull, has signed-up as a Hull 2017 Business Club partner.
They have donated paint to a number of projects so far and the first to come to fruition has put Crown Paints’ products to best effect, with Sandtex Trade masonry paint used to create two end of terrace house murals in the Hessle Road area, which celebrate the community’s rich fishing heritage.
Installed as part of the Hull 2017 ‘Roots & Routes’ season, the Terrace Enders project involves a team of professional artists creating meaningful images of Hull’s fishing industry, its allied industries and the communities they sustained.
It has been developed by local community-led social enterprise the Goodwin Development Trust, along with the residents of Hessle Road, and funded by Hull 2017’s Creative Communities Programme in partnership with the Big Lottery Fund.
Terrace Enders lead artist, Andy Pea, has a personal investment in the project as his father spent most of his life working in the city’s fishing industry. He said: “For me it is a celebration of the Hessle Road community and fishing industry, and it is about remembering and celebrating the lives of those that lived on the street and trying to bring it all together in two amazing murals
“We want to create two fantastic pieces of art that can stand on Hessle Road for a long time.”
Martin Green, Director of Hull 2017, added: “Hessle Road is a pivotal part of Hull life and its heritage, and we are pleased to be able to offer support for these new murals through our Creative Communities Programme.
“It will be a wonderful addition to the city streetscape, to be enjoyed by the local community and visitors alike.”
The Terrace Enders project is one of a number of schemes Crown Paints will be supporting throughout 2017, with focus on two of the brand’s attributes of colour and heritage.
Crown Paints has been manufacturing paints in the city for more than 200 years and has a long history of employment in the region, with almost 200 people working at its Sculcoates Lane manufacturing site and at Crown Decorating Centres located in and around the city.
Joe Devitt, Managing Director of Crown Paints, said: “Terrace Enders is a fantastic opportunity to bring a splash of colour to the city.
“We are looking forward to playing a part in other projects across Hull, which will leave a lasting legacy for many years to come.”
