Third Time Lucky For DDC Apprentice Of The Year

Aron Baker, a painting and decorating apprentice from Welling, has painted his way to victory in Dulux Decorator Centres’ National Apprentice of the Year 2012. After reaching the finals for the third time, he impressed the judges with his attention to detail and creative flair.

Aron, 20, fought off stiff competition from seven other talented painting and decorating apprentices from all over the UK, at the thrilling grand final, which took place on Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14 the June, at Accrington and Rossendale College. The competition was followed by a presentation ceremony held at the Mercure Blackburn Dunkenhalgh Hotel and Spa.

The final saw the apprentices complete a British themed practical work piece to coincide with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. It incorporated a wide range of skills including wallpapering, stencilling, waterborne glosses, and special effects, which were then each judged by leading industry experts.

Aron was announced as the winner, and presented with the coveted award, at the awards evening attended by all the finalists and their lecturers, as well as suppliers, sponsors and executives from Dulux Decorator Centres.

As part of his prize, Aron won over £2,000 worth of prizes, including Dulux Decorator Centres training, as well as a host of prizes for his college, which will benefit future painting and decorating apprentices.

Thomas Regan, aged 20, from Accrington and Rossendale College was the runner up in the competition, while Lucy Porter, aged 20, from Walsall College, picked up third place.
