PDA Podcast explores working in people’s homes
The pitfalls and triumphs of working in people’s homes have been shared in the latest podcast from the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA).
Stuart Yates, who runs Chesterfield-based Stuart Yates Décor, shared stories from his 43-year career, as part of a ‘how to get the best from working with clients in their homes’ discussion.
While chatting with podcast host and PDA Chief Executive Neil Ogilvie, Stuart explained the importance of establishing a rapport with clients.
He said: “When you’re working in someone’s home you have to respect the customer and treat their home as your own.
“I think they want a trustworthy decorator in their house, who they can be confident will do a good job.
“There has to be full trust with the decorator and we have to return that as well.”
During the podcast, the pair share stories of dealing with customers, from undrinkable cups of tea to being asked to feed the cat.
Stuart said: “It’s all about communication. We need to keep them informed, turn up looking clean and tidy, be professional.
“People are looking for something different, they are looking for a quality job, they want advice from their decorator who can give them some ideas of past experience, where you can recommend colours and techniques to them.
“Every job I go to, I always promote the PDA. It’s like a back-up for the customer and for us.”
Neil Ogilvie is hosting the podcasts and travelling around the UK to chat with guests and discuss a wide range of topics from across the sector.
Neil said: “Stuart is a long-standing member of the PDA and he gives some great insight into the importance of treating customers in a professional and friendly manner when working in their homes.
“His story is perhaps particularly valuable to younger people just starting in the trade, as he gives some hints and tips on how to build good relationships with customers.
