Decorator Designs Own Winning Wallpaper

Barrie Thompson, a professional decorator based in North London won the 2017 Dulux Academy Design and Decorating Challenge. Run in partnership with Graham and Brown, wallpaper supplier partner to Dulux Academy, entrants were asked to submit their own wallpaper design and take part in an installation challenge. Barrie’s winning creation is now pride of place as a feature wall in his home.

The Dulux Academy Design and Decorating Challenge offered decorators an opportunity to create their own wallpaper design, in a bid to win a visit to the Graham and Brown factory in Blackburn and receive a bespoke production of the wallpaper.

Barrie incorporated a floral design into his wallpaper, his design coupled with his wallpapering skills which were both judged by the industry expert judging panel made him the overall winner. During his visit to the Graham and Brown factory, he visited the design studios to see the creative process behind wallpaper design. He was then taken for a tour around the factory floor where his design was printed onto seven rolls for him to take away.

“It was a such a surprise to find out I had won the competition,” commented Barrie. “I had a fantastic day visiting the Graham and Brown factory and it was great to learn the full process involved in printing wallpaper. This competition has been a valuble experience and I have since taken advantage of the courses available at the Dulux Academy, including Mural Effects and Feature Walls, which has given me the opportunity to develop my industry knowledge and really enhance the technical expertise I can offer my clients.”

With a commitment to developing the skills of professional decorators, Dulux Academy will again be running a Design and Decorating Challenge in partnership with Graham and Brown this October 2018.
