SHARING THE PRIZE – JT POTY CASE STUDY

External wall insulation (EWI) and render systems can truly transform a building is well as providing them with increased durability against the elements and enhanced efficiency. In this year’s EWI and Render category at the Johnstone’s Trade Painter of the Year Awards the standards were so high that the judges couldn’t decide on just one winner, so the award was split between a commercial and domestic winner. Hodgson Specialist Rendering was awarded the commercial award for its expert work on The Premier Inn at Scarborough, and the domestic award went to J&J Runcie Plasterers Ltd for its work on a stunning new build in Stranraer, Scotland.

Commercial award

Hodgson Specialist Rendering was contracted by PDR Construction to render the exterior of a brand-new Premier Inn hotel in Scarborough to meet fire and U-Value requirements. As the property was close to the sea, specialist systems were need to protect the brickwork and structure from potential elemental damage.

The team USED Johnstone’s Trade Rockwool Dual Density EWI system for enhanced durability and its acoustic dampening and water repellent qualities. This was coupled with Johnstone’s Trade Silicone Enhanced Render, and Johnstone’s Trade High Flexibility Render Basecoat

David Hodgson, Managing Director at Hodgson Specialist Rendering, commented: “We were so pleased to be chosen to complete the rendering works on this new Premier Inn site. We wanted to test ourselves and we certainly faced challenges with terrible weather, however with the help of Johnstone’s Trade we were able to achieve a first-class finish. The client was really happy with the result and for our work to be recognised nationally at the Johnstone’s Trade Painter of the Year awards was just amazing!”

Domestic award

When it came to the domestic award, J&J Runcie Plasterers Ltd was awarded the EWI & Render award for its work on a new build home in Slouchlaw Bay, Stranraer.

The team faced numerous challenges on this project – they too faced adverse weather conditions due to the property’s proximity to the sea. Additionally, the house had an unusual round shape, making the rendering work harder to apply.

Johnstone’s Trade High Flexibility Base Coat was used to avoid cracking, followed by Johnstone’s Trade Full Silicone Render 1.5mm for maximum protection against wind, rain and sea spray.

James Runcie, Director at J&J Runcie Plasterers Ltd, commented: “Our team really enjoyed working on this beautiful new build and I’m so proud of everyone for their work on this project. This award is a celebration of their hard work and expert render skills.”
