Zinsser’s Seaside Success

Building on the coast can present a number of challenges, with saltwater, sand, wind and rain leaving new paintwork looking worn and tired after just a few years.

When Legacy Property began work on its Seascape development, on the Pentire Peninsula near Newquay, it contacted Zinsser to find a paint system which would provide a 10-year lifespan.

Following a site visit from Zinsser’s a three-stage process using Zinsser Peel Stop, Bulls Eye 1-2-3 and Perma-White Exterior Satin was recommended.

The system will , say Zinsser ,ensure that the development, which consists of 10 contemporary apartments and two houses, retains its bright white exterior for the next decade.

Legacy Property’s construction manager, Matt Richardson said: “This is a fantastic location but we have seen from other properties built in this area that the elements take their toll and can leave buildings looking very weathered after a short amount of time.

“We picked the materials used in the build very carefully to ensure they would last, for example we used marine grade steel and composite decking and cladding, so when it came to the paint we wanted a product that would also provide a long-term finish.

“We were very impressed with Zinsser, they took the time to understand exactly what we needed and provided a system which will deliver that. It’s great being able to assure our buyers that their homes will still look as great in 10 years’ time as they do today.”

Seascape, which is located just five minutes from the world-renowned Fistral Beach, took 15 months to complete and features a mix of one to four-bedroom apartments and houses, all with stunning views over the Cornish coast.

Each of the Zinsser products used during the work has a specific purpose, as Zinsser’s business development manager Richard Thomas explains: “We started with a coat of Peel Stop – a clear primer which increases the bond of any subsequent coatings to the wall and prevents the first coat of paint soaking straight into the render, therefore preventing peeling, flaking, dusting or chalking.

“We followed this with a coat of Bulls Eye 1-2-3 which is a great bonding primer and also contains a biocide to protect against fungal degradation, increasing the overall lifespan of the finished job.

“The building was then finished with two top coats of Perma White Exterior Satin which allows dirt and moisture to run off its surface and contains an anti-mould protection which keeps the building looking brighter and whiter for longer.”

All the paints used for the project were supplied by Steve Caruana of Rabart Decorating Centres, from its branch in Redruth, Cornwall and applied by Stuart Elliott Decorators.
