Dumbreck Decorators of Glasgow has been crowned the winner of a new award that recognises the company’s contribution to young people in the city.

The decorating contractor was presented with the ‘Working Together‘ Award in The Glasgow Herald’s first Inspiring City Awards at a recent ceremony in front of key figures including including football legend Sir Alex Ferguson and entrepreneur Sir Tom Farmer.

Dumbreck Decorators Working Together AwardThe Award recognises the important role of business and individuals in improving the social fabric by recruiting unemployed or disadvantaged Glasgow residents. Dumbreck’s long history of employing, training and giving experience to the city’s young people through Modern Apprenticeships and work placements made them a clear winner said the judges.

The family business, which has roots going back to 1875, directly employees more than 100 painters and decorators many of whom have been with the company for more than 20 years. And they recruit and train their own apprentices – male and female –with 17 currently working on projects across Scotland.

Mark Johnston, Managing Director of Dumbreck Decorators, said: “We’re delighted to be recognised with this award. “Throughout the recession, we’ve continued to take on new apprentices every year through the Commonwealth Apprentice Initiative, CITB and work placement initiatives like TIGERS and the charity Action for Children because we know how vital it is to support and invest in the city’s young (and not so young) people – and the future generation of the industry.”
