Crown Paints Boost For Local Charities

Crown Paints has awarded thousands of pounds in funding to worthy community projects and not-for-profit schemes in and around Darwen.

The paint manufacturer, which employs 500 people in the Lancashire town, has awarded a total of £10,000 as part of its annual Crown Paints Darwen Community Awards, in partnership with Darwen Town Council.

Crown’s £500 donation to the Neil Wickers Memorial Fund for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) allowed the fund to achieve its £5,000 target. CRY works to offer cardiac screenings to young people aged between 14 and 35; Irene Wickers set up the memorial fund in memory of her son Neil, who died in 1996 from an undiagnosed heart defect aged just 31.

Crown has also awarded £2,000 to Whitehall Bowling Club, which has been a vital part of the community for over a century. The club will be putting the money towards resurfacing its walkway around the bowling green in preparation for its 110 year anniversary celebrations, which will see the club welcome the ‘Walk This Way’ choir to the bowling club for a special performance.

Everton Street Bowling Club has also set its sights on repairing its entrance path, and Crown Paints and the Darwen Community Awards have donated £1,800 towards the works which would allow the club to repair the thoroughfare that runs from the club’s entrance gate to the pavilion.

The final donation was awarded to Junior Gardeners Football Club, which received £1,778 which will pay for new equipment for the club. The grassroots club, which is part of the Accrington & Junior District Football League and provides coaching to children aged four to 16, will spend the funds on several pairs of new football goals and a new crowd respect barrier.
