Demand for female painters “surging”

According to analysis of online search data by independent paint retailer The Paint Shed, demand for female painters and decorators is surging. Google searches for “Female Decorators Near Me” have shown a massive 85% increase recently.

When broken down regionally, there were key hot spots of interest. Sheffield and Plymouth, in particular, saw searches surge 400%.

Michael Rolland, Managing Director at The Paint Shed commented “It is encouraging to see a gradual increase in women entering trades, hopefully contributing to a more diverse and inclusive industry. While women currently represent approximately 4% of the painting and decorating sector, we are optimistic that growth and interest is a trend which will persist, contributing to a breakdown in traditional gender barriers and enriching the trades with a broader range of talent and perspectives.”

“We’ve seen that demand for tradeswomen is increasing. For example, Google searches for female painters and decorators have surged, which may have spurred women to enter a previously male-dominated industry. Our analysis of search trends shows that female painters and decorators are specifically in demand in Sheffield, Plymouth, Bristol and Liverpool, which is exciting to see and suggests that previous prejudices could be waning.”

“Despite strides toward gender equality in trade industries, women continue to face substantial challenges, including sexism and gender bias. There is a stereotype that trade work is a male industry, which can lead to women being unfairly expected to repeatedly prove their competence to gain the same level of respect that is automatically afforded to their male colleagues “.

He concludes “ We hope that companies begin investing in women–promoting mentorship programs that support women’s growth and development in the trades.”
