TRANSFORMING A DATED OFFICE BUILDING – JT PotY Case Study

Intelligently designed office spaces are crucial for productive working and upkeeping positive wellbeing for employees. These factors not only apply to interior spaces, but the exterior design as well. Davison Solutions’ work transforming a traditional office block into a visual delight is a key example of this; a project that saw them take home the Johnstone’s Trade Painter of the Year Commercial category award.

Royal Middlehaven House is a three-storey office building that was built in the late 1970s. The building is close to Middlesbrough Train Station, an area of recent regeneration with several new and updated developments surrounding the office. Davison Solutions were contracted to update the exterior of the building in line with the local modernisation.

The team were tasked to renovate the exterior windows, rainscreen cladding panels, metalwork and render on the building to bring it up to date with the high-spec interior and neighbouring buildings. Paul Davison, Managing Director at Davison Solutions, explained: “We were really excited to take on this project as we instantly saw the potential to transform the look of the traditional offices into something more fun and visually appealing.”

A colourful creation

To align with the client’s brief for a dynamic look, the team used a striking grey, black, bright pink, and white colour palette. An impressive freehand design of concentric circles was added to the exterior of the building while bespoke stencils were created and used to add the lettering.

The Davison team of five worked on the project between September and November 2020, meaning they faced the challenges of working around cold and damp weather conditions. To mitigate these issues and achieve a high quality, professional finish, they turned to Johnstone’s Trade.

For the exterior metalwork of the building, the team used Johnstone’s Trade Steel and Cladding Semi-Gloss Topcoat and Johnstone’s Trade Smooth Metal Paint. Both contain anti-corrosive properties for long-lasting protection. Johnstone’s Trade Stormshield Smooth Masonry was also chosen for the exterior as it is rain resistant after just 20 minutes and can be applied from 2°C and rising; a perfect choice given the winter months.

The judges complimented the team on opting for a bold and unique statement. They also commented that the team have shown great skill in painting the intricate design details and have created something that will be a talking point for both office users and passers-by.
