Battle biological growth
Safeguard’s SoluGuard Multi-Surface Biocide is a biocidal solution that removes biological growth, such as moss or algae, from masonry walls. Moss or algae often appear on damp walls because they use the moisture to grow. Some types can damage stone or brickwork, causing pitting or blistering. Mosses also retain water, further increasing moisture levels in the area where they are growing.
Although SoluGuard Multi-Surface Biocide can be used on its own to remove moss or algae, it has been created to work as part of a system with Stormdry Masonry Cream, which is used to protect walls from rain penetration.
“Just like damp itself, algae can be more than an unsightly problem,” explains Dr Eric Rirsch. “Growths like this are usually a sign that a wall is damp. And what many people don’t know is that a damp wall is a much poorer insulator than a dry one.” A research study, sponsored by Safeguard and MAS South East, showed that treating a damp wall with Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream can save up to 29% on energy bills.
SoluGuard Multi-Surface Biocide can be applied with brush, roller or a coarse spray to concrete, stone, render, driveways, patios and roof tiles. One litre of SoluGuard Multi-Surface Biocide will cover between 2 and 20 square metres of surface, with coverage dependent on the porosity of the substrate.
Where Stormdry Masonry Protection cream is to be used afterwards, the treated wall should be cleaned after 72 hours using a pressure washer to remove all remnants of the dead biological growth.
Once the system of SoluGuard Multi-Surface Biocide and Stormdry cream has been applied, the wall will be protected from both damp and biological growth.
