Choosing exterior systems that stand up to the elements
With weather extremes becoming more frequent and intense across the UK, there is greater emphasis on exterior systems that deliver long-term protection. Matt Gray, Skills Development Consultant at Dulux Academy at AkzoNobel, shares his considerations for achieving top exterior results that withstand harsh conditions.
Exterior decorating always brings its own challenges, from heavy rainfall and fluctuating temperatures to prolonged UV exposure. Coatings need to withstand a wide range of conditions, making it important to choose products that deliver both a high-quality finish and long-term performance.

Temperature matters most
While exterior work is often associated with spring and summer, it is temperature, rather than just the season, that has the biggest impact on application and performance.
Painting in temperatures above 30°C can cause coatings to dry too quickly. This can lead to visible application marks and may affect adhesion, increasing the risk of cracking, blistering or peeling over time. On the other hand, applying paint in temperatures below 10°C can slow drying and curing, leaving surfaces tacky and more vulnerable to damage.
This means that decorators must carefully plan and time their exterior jobs. Even if daytime conditions are suitable, a drop below 10°C overnight can affect film formation and overall finish quality. In cooler conditions, moisture and condensation on surfaces can further impact adhesion, particularly on exterior woodwork and trim.

Preparation remains critical
No matter the product, long-lasting results start with thorough preparation. Exterior substrates are often exposed to dirt, pollutants and biological growth which all need to be addressed before painting begins.
Surfaces should be cleaned to remove loose material, with particular attention to areas affected by mould or algae. A fungicidal wash, such as Polycell Mould Remover Spray, should be used to treat and prevent regrowth, followed by a thorough rinse. It is also important to make sure it has sufficient time to dry before the next coat is applied.
Repairing cracks and holes is also essential, along with sanding and smoothing where required. For unstable or chalky masonry, a stabilising primer, such as Dulux Trade Weathershield Stabilising Primer, can help seal the surface and improve adhesion. Taking the time to prepare properly ensures coatings can perform as intended and helps avoid premature failure.
Balancing efficiency with durability
With suitable temperature windows often limited, efficiency on site is key. However, it’s important not to prioritise speed at the expense of long-term performance. While quick-drying masonry paint can help to maximise available working time, decorators should ensure they are still selecting coatings that provide the durability and protection required for exterior environments.
Allowing sufficient drying time between coats and ensuring surfaces are fully dry, especially after washing, remains essential for achieving a long-lasting professional finish.
Delivering results that last
To deliver results that not only look good but maintain their appearance for years to come, it is important to choose high-quality, exterior-specific coatings that deliver strong adhesion, colour retention and resistance to weathering. Products that have undergone rigorous testing and offer long term protection, such as those with third-party accreditation, can provide additional quality assurance. For example, the Dulux Trade Weathershield range is designed to deliver long-lasting protection against the elements. Dulux Trade Weathershield Smooth Masonry offers up to 15 years’ all-weather protection and is BBA approved, helping decorators achieve reliable results across a range of exterior surfaces.
