Battle of the Apprentices

Apprentices from across the UK have showcased their skills at three competition events hosted by national trade body, the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA).

42 apprentices took part in the PDA’s annual Apprentice of the Year competition, with heats held at colleges in Accrington, Coventry and Kent.

The competition winners will be announced during the PDA’s Premier Trophy Awards at Plaisterers’ Hall, London, in July.

The six-hour contest heats offered apprentices the opportunity to test their skills against their peers.

They were tasked with replicating a given design, testing not only their accuracy and skill, but their ability to perform under pressure.

The heats were held at Accrington and Rossendale College in March, Coventry College in April and North Kent College in May.

Neil Ogilvie, Chief Executive of the PDA, said: “The quality of entries this year has been outstanding.

“These young people have really showcased their talent and professionalism and it is a pleasure to be judging their excellent work.

“I’d like to thank our sponsors CITB, Purdy Professional Painting Tools, Brewers Decorating Centres and Tesa for their support.

“These competitions are a great opportunity for apprentices to meet their peers and put their skills to the test.

“They value the competition experience and it is important to us as a membership organisation to provide these opportunities for people starting their careers in the industry.”
