Leyland SDM Big Charity Giveaway

Community centre bags £1,000 for refurb work

A community centre for the elderly in Holborn is planning much-needed refurbishment work after securing £1,000 worth of materials from a leading hardware and decorating merchant.

Holborn Community Association is celebrating after securing the bumper prize as part of Leyland SDM’s Give London a Lift campaign.

Leyland SDM, which has 23 branches across London, has launched the materials giveaway competition to help community groups, organisations and charities in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

There are 10 lots of £1,000 in store credit to be won through Give London a Lift between now and October.

Holborn Community Association works with more than 2,500 people each year.

The materials will be used at its Millman Street Centre, which is the charity’s base for working with isolated and vulnerable elderly members, providing day care for those with dementia, as well as physical, social and creative activities.

Andrew Bater, operations manager at Holborn Community Association, said: “We’re over the moon to be named as one of the first winners in Leyland SDM’s Give London a Lift campaign.

“Holborn Community Association has been a vital part of the local community for over 30 years. Across three centres, we run a range of sport, play and art activities for everyone from 0 to 99 and upwards.

“Our Millan Street centre will benefit enormously from this support. It will enable us to carry out so much work including repairing dripping taps, sprucing up the toilets and painting both inside and out.

“It’s going to make such a huge difference to our day centre members and couldn’t have come at a better time.”

Paul Gerreli, marketing director at Leyland SDM, said: “We launched Give London a Lift to boost groups and organisations during this difficult time. Holborn Community Association was an obvious choice as a winner because of the amazing work they do with the isolated and vulnerable in their vicinity.

“It’s clear that they were in need of some assistance to improve some areas of their Millan Street facility. It will look so much better after a bit of work and I can’t wait to see the reaction of the day centre members when they see what has been done.

“Our team at Leyland SDM Farringdon are working with the charity to advise on the best products and to make the budget stretch as far as possible.

“It’s been a difficult time for organisations, community groups and charities. We’re proud to be a part of the community in London and we’re delighted to be able to help 10 good causes through Give London a Lift.”

Give London a Lift is running until the end of October.

Organisations can apply online each month, detailing why they believe they would by worthy recipients of the £1,000, and winners will be chosen by a team of judges.

The money can be spent on anything from paint to tools and electrical wiring to plumbing parts.

Applications can be made on the Leyland SDM website – www.leylandsdm.co.uk/givelondonalift – by providing a 200-word overview of the organisation.
