Cutty Sark commission for Sadolin
Few wooden structures are more famous than the Cutty Sark – so the project to preserve the world famous ship was always going to test the boundaries of technical woodcare protection and craftsmanship. The premium product Sadolin Ultra has measured up to the challenge, giving Cutty Sark the protection she needs for the future and a stunning decorative finish – as well as exceptional consistency and application qualities to make the job plain sailing for the contractor, Maldon Painting Company.
Earlier this year, Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh, officially re-opened the ship – the world’s last surviving tea clipper and one of Britain’s greatest maritime treasures – following an extensive conservation project.
The long-term protection and decoration of the exterior wood was critical to the project and Sadolin Ultra was specified for use on Cutty Sark’s teak deckhouses, spectacular wheel, ornate pin rails, decorative panelling and many other wooden fixtures and fittings on deck.
Ultra is a highly translucent woodstain, offering exceptional durability, all weather protection, longevity of finish – and environmental benefits with a new alkyd formulation that requires less solvent, achieving 2010 VOC Compliance, without any compromise on quality.
The formulation allows the natural beauty of wood to shine through, highlighting its natural features – with the reassurance of up to seven years’ protection.
The project demanded meticulous attention to detail from Maldon Painting Company, and started with stripping all the old varnish right back and sanding the teak back to a smooth surface. This aspect took months to get the wood to the required standard, as much of it was badly denatured.
