Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Takes a Bow
Nigel Wilkinson Painting & Decorating Ltd has been voted the Supreme Winner of the prestigious Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Awards 2022.
The annual awards, hosted by Johnstone’s Trade, acknowledge the outstanding talent within the painting and decorating industry and showcase some of the best projects completed during the previous year.
The awards ceremony took place on Saturday 10th June at The Royal Hall, Harrogate, and saw professionals from across the industry come together to celebrate their great work and vote for the Supreme Winner of the Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Awards.
The event featured 29 finalists competing across eight categories: Commercial and Industrial; Education; Healthcare; Historical; Hospitality; Residential; and two newly added categories, External Wall Insulation (EWI) and Render. From these category winners, attendees on the night voted to crown just one as the Supreme Winner.
The Supreme Winner
The Supreme Winner title was presented to the Historical category winner, Nigel Wilkinson Painting & Decorating Ltd. The project involved decorating the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption – the largest in the Parish of Magherafelt, Northern Ireland.
After more than 100 years since its last full redecoration, the building needed a new colour scheme, so the team worked with PPG colour experts to achieve a dramatic transformation. Work on the beautiful Roman Catholic structure was completed within just six weeks, using Johnstone’s Trade Acrylic Durable Matt, Eggshell and Polyurethane Gloss Varnish.
Category winners
Bell Group Ltd claimed the Commercial & Industrial award for exceptional work on the exterior façade at Collins Aerospace HQ in Prestwick. The team worked closely with PPG to ensure the system protection and corporate branding objectives were met while successfully delivering a high-quality finish to the building.
Alldec (Northern) Ltd. took home the Education category award for an internal redecoration at the Wren Academy in Enfield. The project required extensive work to be carried out across three buildings on the site and was finished within 12 months.
Shane Smyth Decorators Ltd. triumphed in the Residential category for refurbishing a palatial house in Georgian Village, Dublin. The team completed the project within a tight timeframe and to a high finish, with fantastic attention to detail.
The Healthcare category winner was Alfred Bagnall & Sons (North West) Ltd., for its remarkable redecoration of the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The unique project included communal areas, corridors, large stairwells, operating theatres, wards and a high-level atrium.
Henderson Decorators Ltd emerged as the winner of the Hospitality category for carrying out internal and external decoration of the Rothes Glen boutique hotel and bringing the 19th century structure back to its former glory. The project showcased outstanding levels of skill in applying gold detailing to features throughout the property.
The External Wall Insulation award was presented to Jefferies Contractors Limited for doing a fabulous job at Peacehaven Court, Tredegar. Consisting of 29 flats for elderly residents, the job presented unique challenges, including working with various substrates. The colour choices and finish options allowed the project to shine and helped reduce energy consumption for the residents.
EWIS (UK) Ltd. received the award in the Render category for carrying out beautiful detailing work to porch, canopy and quoin features at John Barnes Court, Somerset. Working within a live community of vulnerable residents, the team delivered the highest standards of work while maintaining respect for the workplace.
