Power Up Your Business with the PDA

The Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) has held its first Power Up Your Business with the PDA webinar, with experts from its Associate Partner, Citation.
Focusing on changes introduced by the Employment Rights Bill, Citation’s webinar, hosted by Partnerships Manager Adrian Brine with Associate Speaker Flora Neville, highlighted key points within the legislation that all businesses will need to plan for over the coming months.
Topics covered in the webinar included:
- ‘Day one’ rights on parental and paternity leave
- unfair dismissal
- increases of sick pay entitlement
- guaranteed hours contract for zero hours workers *
- reasonable notice of variations to shifts and flexible working.
Business owner and Associate Speaker with Citation, Flora Neville, delivered the webinar, giving an overview of the changes and highlighting reforms which are most likely to directly impact all businesses over the next six to 18 months.
She said: “It doesn’t matter if you employ five people or 500 people. As employers you are expected to know the legislation. Ignorance is not a defence.
“It’s about getting it right and having the right things in place. If you find yourself in a tribunal situation, the evidence – what is written down in black and white, that shows you have put the right things in place and enforced them – is what will matter.
“The amount of time employees will have to make a tribunal claim is going to rise from three months to six. I think we could see a big rise in the number of claims, so it’s really important for employers to have the possibility of a tribunal claim on their agenda – and how to avoid it.”
For PDA members who were unable to attend the webinar, Citation will be providing a guide to the Employment Rights Bill in the coming weeks, which will be sent to members via e-mail.
Adrian Brine added: “What we’re talking about is one of the most significant changes to employment law that I’ve seen during my almost 20 years of working in this industry.
“The increasing demand we have seen for HR and Health and Safety support illustrates, in my view, how increasingly tough it is to operate as a business within the UK from a legislation and regulatory perspective.
.
PDA Chief Executive, Neil Ogilvie said: “Regulatory and legislation changes that affect all businesses can be challenging to navigate and we urge all our members to look at what our Associate Partners can offer in terms of business support.”
