Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year

Jamie Oliver, a 21-year-old student from K College in Folkestone has proved himself as the finest young decorator in the country after wowing the judges in this year’s Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year competition.

The award, which aims to showcase young talent, reward best practice and encourage young people to enter the professional painting and decorating industry, has been successfully staged by Johnstone’s since 2005 with hundreds of students taking part each year.

Open to students working towards NVQ level 2 or an Intermediate Construction Award in Painting and Decorating, the competition starts with regional heats held at colleges across the country. Jamie Oliver competed in and won the South East regional heat, where he was judged on a range of skills including the ability to set out a specified design and follow a brief.

Johnstone’s Young Painter of the YearSeven regional finalists then fought out for the top spot at the National Painting and Decorating Show in Coventry, where they were tasked with undertaking two days of highly skilled painting, following a detailed specification from Johnstone’s all under the watchful eye of technical experts and fellow professionals.

Each with their own workstation consisting of a wall panel with a door and framework, the finalists were judged on accuracy, preparation, attention to detail, ability to work to a detailed brief and ability to apply different types of paint. The students used a variety of products from Johnstone’s extensive product range to complete the practical tasks as well as brushes from Fat Hog’s popular Evolution range.

Pete McParland, a member of the Johnstone’s technical team, said: “The work carried out by our seven finalists in this year’s Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year competition has been first rate. Competing in the final certainly isn’t easy – the tasks are complex, the time constraints are tight and contestants have to work in full view of thousands of professional painters, but they take it all in their stride. Each and every young painter who makes it to the final should be proud of what they have achieved.”

Jamie not only took the prestigious title, but was also presented with a generous assortment of prizes, including a 24” LCD TV, an iPad and iPod, as well as VIP tickets to the 2013/14 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final at Wembley and the prestigious Painter of the Year Awards in 2014. He also won a paint sprayer donated by Graco and a Fat Hog goody bag, along with a prize package with donations from Purdy, Hamilton, Brushmate, Go Paint!, Toupret, RoDO, Mirka and Youngman.

After being presented with the award, Jamie said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been named Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year. It was a very proud moment which I won’t forget in a hurry and has definitely been worth all the hard work I put in. It was a great experience, especially being surrounded by so many talented painters and decorators.

“The competition offers a fantastic opportunity for young painters like me – we get to show industry experts what we can do and gain experience along the way. I’d encourage all young painters and decorators to take part in the competition as it’s a great platform and will certainly give my career a boost.”

Entries for the 2014 Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year competition are now being accepted and following a number of regional heats during the spring, the best of the best will once again come together for the national final next November.
